Car Entertainment Options to Keep the Kids Busy

Between long hours in peek hour traffic and holiday road trips, we spend a lot of time in our cars, and while the comfort and luxury of vehicles increases, so too do the options for making the journey more interesting.

In-vehicle entertainment has moved forward in leaps and bounds over the last decade, with most cars now fitted with a CD player as a standard. But as music moves rapidly from CD to mp3 players, and cars adjust at an only slightly less rapid pace, it can be hard to keep up with your options for entertainment. But if it’s a long car trip you’re making and the kids you want to keep busy, you should definitely consider amping up the entertainment. Just remember that increasing your entertainment also increases the value of your car, so get a requote on you car insurance to ensure you are covered.

1. Standard audio
These days, the most standard piece of entertainment equipment in a car is the humble CD player — if you’re buying a new car, there is no way you won’t find a CD player, unless there is something more advanced. While a CD player is handy, with most of us now storing our music on an mp3 player — the majority on an iPod — chances are we don’t have a lot of CDs with our favorite music lying around. Car manufacturers are taking this on board, and while it is only new now, it won’t be uncommon — very soon — to see an iPod connection as a standard fitting in cars. For the moment, you can get an iPod connecter from any good auto or electronics store, and even some department stores. Just because your car is a little behind the times, doesn’t mean your entertainment has to be!

2. Improving your audio
If you’re looking for something a little more advanced than the standard CD player your car comes fitted with, and the addition of an mp3 tuner, you have a lot of options. Don’t get confused, going to the next step does not mean getting the loud, rattling, blasting sound system seen in the car of some teenage boys, it means finding something that’s suitable to your vehicle and your needs. If the terms, head unit, speaker and amplifier mean nothing to you, it may not be the best idea to try and set up your sound system yourself.

Fortunately, stores dedicated to these systems generally comprise not only the equipment but also technicians or advisors who can help you get started, and install the equipment for you.

3. Keeping the kids busy
While Wiggles’ CDs blasting through the car will keep the kids at bay for a while, there are now far more entertaining ways to keep them absorbed for hours. If you have the money, invest in non-standard extras, such as a DVD player and screens when you purchase your car. If you’re not in the market for a new car, you can now purchase screens and portable DVD players from auto stores and electronics stores. This means your kids can not only listen to the Wiggles, but watch them perform, meaning you can concentrate on the drive and the scenery!
